220kV Phuoc Thai substation expansion project was officially energized and operated

The 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation Expansion Project is implemented at the existing 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation by expanding the existing substation area within the land area already allocated for the Phuoc Thai 1 Solar Power Plant project in Hoai Trung village, Phuoc Thai commune, Ninh Phuoc district, Ninh Thuan province.

The 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation Expansion project was approved for inclusion in the adjusted Power Development Plan VII by the Prime Minister in Documents No. 356/TTg-CN dated March 9, 2017 and No. 1655/TTg-CN dated December 6, 2019 on Implementing 220kV Grid Projects to Relieve Congestion for Renewable Energy Sources in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces.

The project investor is Vietnam Electricity (EVN), represented by Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB 2). The engineering and construction supervision consultant is Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 4 (EVNPECC4).

The project is classified as a class-I industrial energy construction, group B, with a 3-step design (feasibility study, technical design and detailed design).

The scope for the expansion phase includes the installation of 2 x 220/110/22kV - 250MVA transformers and associated equipment in the expanded area of 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation. The total capacity after expansion is: 1 x 22/22/220kV - 125MVA transformer + 2 x 220/110/22kV - 250MVA transformers.

The Acceptance Council accepted the 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation Expansion Project on November 8, 2023. At 12:50 pm on November 11 2023, the project was officially energized and operated with 2 x 220/110/22kV - 250MVA transformers to help relieve congestion for renewable energy projects in Ninh Thuan province and prepare to receive power from Phuoc Thai 2 and Phuoc Thai 3 Solar Power Plants invested by EVN.

Scope for expansion phase:

- Installation of 2 x 220/110/22kV - 250MVA transformers and associated equipment in the expanded area of 220kV Phuoc Thai Substation. Total capacity after expansion: 1 x 22/22/220kV - 125MVA transformer + 2 x 220/110/22kV - 250MVA transformers.

- 220kV switchyard: 9 feeder bays, including 3 new bays, a reserved bay and 5 existing bays.

- 110kV switchyard: 11 feeder bays, including 5 new bays and 6 reserved bays.

- Control system: Computer-based control system.

- Protection system: Digital relays with IEC-61850 protocol.

At 20:22 on April 29th 2026, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), in coordination with the Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB) and the National Power System and Market Operation Co., Ltd. (NSMO), successfully energized the project to upgrade the capacity of the 500kV Hoa Binh Substation, increasing its capacity from 1,350MVA to 1,800MVA.
