Earth Hour 2023 Spreads the Message "Energy Saving – Building A Habit"
As part of the National Energy Efficiency Programme 2019-2030 (VNEEP3), the Ministry of Industry and Trade has launched the Earth Hour 2023 campaign to promote the spirit of collective energy saving and environmental protection to the entire community.
Earth Hour is an annual international event initiated by the World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in 2007. The campaign calls on households and businesses to turn off lights and non-essential electrical devices for 60 minutes (from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time on the last Saturday of March each year).
In 2009, Vietnam participated in Earth Hour for the first time, involving six provinces and cities, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Hoi An, Hue, and Nha Trang. Over the past 14 years, the campaign has brought about positive changes in the community's awareness of the importance and benefits of energy saving, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation.
The Earth Hour campaign in 2023 carries the message "Saving electricity - building a habit”
As the leading organizer of the campaign for many years, in 2023, within the framework of the National Energy Efficiency Programme 2019-2030 (VNEEP3), the Ministry of Industry and Trade continues to launch the Earth Hour campaign to promote the spirit of collective energy saving and environmental protection to the entire community.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Vu, Deputy Head of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development, Deputy Head of the Office of the National Steering Committee for Energy Efficiency (Ministry of Industry and Trade), stated: "The message of this year's Earth Hour campaign is ENERGY SAVING - BUILDING A HABIT. This is also the message of the electricity saving program for 2020-2025, implementing Directive 20 on strengthening electricity saving during 2020-2025 by the Prime Minister. With this message, we hope that all citizens, communities, and businesses nationwide will join hands to protect the environment, save energy, save electricity, and work towards a green future, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, as committed by Vietnam at COP26."
Since late February, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has implemented various activities in response to the Earth Hour 2023 campaign. Accordingly, the Ministry has developed a communication identity with the message "ENERGY SAVING – BUILDING A HABIT." The message conveying to the community is not just about saving electricity and energy and protecting the environment for one hour, but rather the practice of doing so regularly throughout the year, making energy saving and efficiency a habit.
The media identity of the Earth Hour campaign in 2023
The communication identity has been publicly released and distributed nationwide through the Departments of Industry and Trade and the electricity companies in all 63 provinces and cities to disseminate and mobilize the community and businesses to participate in the Earth Hour 2023 campaign.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued a document requesting the People's Committees of provinces, centrally-governed cities, and the Vietnam Electricity to organize communication activities in March to attract the attention and participation of organizations, agencies, and people within their localities. During the designated Earth Hour event, they are encouraged to turn off lights and non-essential devices.
The Earth Hour Run, which involves over 1,000 professional and non-professional athletes, is scheduled to take place on the morning of Saturday, March 18th, at Dinh Tien Hoang Pedestrian Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi. The event aims to spread the "Energy Saving - Building A Habit" message through meaningful and practical activities, promoting the connection between sports and energy saving.
The running race will take place on the morning of March 18, 2023, at Hoan Kiem Lake pedestrian street in Hanoi, Vietnam
As part of the campaign, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will organize the first-ever online competition to raise awareness about Earth Hour. The competition will be conducted online through the website of the National Energy Efficiency Programme (https://tietkiemnangluong.com.vn/). With a simple gameplay and valuable information, along with dozens of valuable prizes, the competition promises to offer participants a lot of interesting experiences.
The Earth Hour learning competition will start from March 17th to March 31st, 2023
In particular, the lights-off event in response to the campaign will occur throughout the country from 20:30 to 21:30 on Saturday, March 25. Concurrently, communication activities in support of the Earth Hour campaign will be intensified through the information channels of the VNEEP Program, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Vietnam Electricity.
Each year, an increasing number of organizations, businesses, and associations voluntarily participate in activities demonstrating their support for the campaign, such as media dissemination, propaganda, and voluntary agreements on environmental protection, energy conservation, and waste reduction. With meaningful activities in response to this year's campaign, the Ministry of Industry and Trade expects that Earth Hour will increasingly generate positive effects and spread the spirit of energy conservation and environmental protection to the entire community.
