EVNPECC4 contributed a presentation to the specialized workshop on the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP)
On September 12th and 13th 2024, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) organized a specialized workshop on the application of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) in power systems with a high proportion of renewable energy. Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 4 (EVNPECC4) had the honor of contributing a presentation "Analysis of sub-synchronous oscillations in power systems using EMTP: SSR analysis for thermal power plants and SSCI for large-scale wind power plants" at the workshop.
The workshop was held in a combined online and offline format, chaired by Deputy General Director of EVN Ngo Son Hai. The workshop brought together Prof. Tran Quoc Tuan - Paris-Saclay University, Prof. Jean Mahseredjian - Montreal Polytechnic, a Fellow member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), representatives from Energy Institute of Energy, the National Power System and Market Operator Company (NSMO), EVN's specialized departments, 9 General Corporations and 4 Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Companies in EVN.
In addition, the Electric Power University, University of Science and Technology of Hanoi, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Vietnam National University Hanoi, Water Resources University, Da Nang University of Science and Technology, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology also sent representatives to attend the workshop.
During the workshop, the delegates were introduced to EMTP and its advanced features by Prof. Jean Mahseredjian and Prof. Tran Quoc Tuan; guided on building and simulating power grids with increasing integration of renewable energy sources and inverter-based sources; the benefits of EMTP in the electricity market; how to build and process data, types and methods of simulation.

On the first day of the workshop, EVNPECC4's representative presented a presentation "Analysis of sub-synchronous oscillations in power systems using EMTP: SSR analysis for thermal power plants and SSCI for large-scale wind power plants".
The interconnection of power plants to a transmission system equipped with fixed series capacitors poses a risk of large-amplitude oscillations at frequencies below the system's synchronous frequency, known as sub-synchronous oscillations (SSO). SSOs can have a severe impact on the operability of thermal power units as well as cause damage to wind farms. Therefore, in this presentation, EVNPECC4's representative showcased EVNPECC4's experience in analyzing and assessing the potential for sub-synchronous oscillations in the Vietnamese power system, with practical case studies.
Mr. Võ Đăng Đoàn Nghĩa (Master of Engineer) – EVNPECC4's Research & Development Centre presented at the seminar on the afternoon of September 12th
EVNPECC4's presentation was highly commended by delegates and experts at the workshop for its comprehensive analysis of sub-synchronous oscillations using advanced EMTP-based techniques including Electrical Damping, Impedance-Frequency scanning, and Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation, which are widely recognized and applied in global research and reports. These methods demonstrated the powerful capabilities of EMTP in analyzing complex power system phenomena.
EVNPECC4's presentation received praise from delegates and experts at the seminar
The specialized workshop on the application of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) in power systems with a high penetration of renewable energy provided a valuable platform for entities in EVN, Ministry of Industry and Trade agencies, and universities to exchange expertise on various power system issues, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of their respective operations.
