The speakers at the workshop included Dr. Xin Yaozhong - Chief Expert of the China Electricity Council, Former Deputy Director of National Power Dispatching Control Center of State Grid Corporation of China; Dr. Hui Dong - Chief Expert of the China Electric Power Research Institute; Mr. Nguyen Huu Doan - Senior Solution Manager of Huawei Digital Power SEAMC. The workshop was also attended by leaders from Khanh Hoa Department of Industry and Trade, along with numerous experts and engineers from Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 3 - Central Branch; Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 5, and Khanh Hoa Power Joint Stock Company.
At the workshop, speakers introduced the development of China's power system, the necessity of developing and applying Grid Forming Technology (GFM) in power systems with high renewable energy integration, and the core characteristics that constitute GFM technology.
Workshop on Grid Forming Technology solutions for construction and improvement of Vietnamese Power Grid System on the afternoon of October 31st
In the first presentation, Dr. Xin Yaozhong shared insights on "Renewable energy development and new energy source operation control in China." With over 40 years of experience in power dispatch, Dr. Yaozhong presented on the structure of renewable energy sources in China and globally, power system challenges, and control system design and optimization techniques. He particularly emphasized GFM as breakthrough technology, helping maintain frequency and voltage stability amid renewable energy fluctuations. The robust development of renewable energy sources in China demonstrates the importance of GFM in operating modern energy systems.

In the second presentation, Dr. Hui Dong delivered an online presentation about GFM technology, emphasizing its crucial role in power systems. The content included technology overview, application scenarios, and an example of GFM integration testing in the power grid. GFM is considered a key solution for maintaining stability and safe operation of power systems, especially in the context of increasing renewable energy proportions.
GFM technology ensures power source and load balance even during source reduction incidents due to weather effects on renewable energy. GFM helps reduce the slope and amplitude of oscillation while supporting systems with low inertia reserves. Compared to traditional energy sources, GFM excels in rapid frequency control response, voltage recovery, and ancillary services provision, particularly effective with low short-circuit ratio (SCR) grids.
During the presentation, Dr. Hui Dong simulated and tested GFM in various operating scenarios. Results showed that GFM responds quickly and effectively, helping systems recover stability after incidents, confirming the technology's widespread application potential in modern power grids.

In the third presentation, Mr. Nguyen Huu Doan - Senior Sulution Manager of Huawei Digital Power SEAMC introduced the Smart String ESS 2.0 (Smart String Energy Storage System 2.0) integrating GFM technology from Huawei. This is an advanced energy storage solution ensuring equipment safety, stable and accurate operation, while being easy to manage and maintain. This system enhances operational efficiency of low short-circuit ratio (SCR) grids, contributing to voltage and frequency stability, harmonic reduction, and improved power system reliability.
Mr. Doan and the experts agreed that increasing renewable energy proportion to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, moving towards Net Zero, poses major challenges for power system stability. The instability of renewable energy requires advanced solutions like GFM to ensure safe and efficient operation.
