Successfully energizing Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project

01/10/2025 16:19:39

At 23:12 on 30 September 2025, Vietnam Electricity, Power Project Management Board 1, in coordination with relevant units at the construction site, successfully energized the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project, completing 8 months ahead of schedule compared to the original plan, according to the project investment policy decision approved by the Prime Minister. Previously, on September 29 and 30, 2025, the Lao Cai 500kV substation phase 2 and the 500kV feeders at the Vinh Yen 500kV substation were also successfully energized.

The Lao Cai – Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project is a national key project, consisting of a 500kV double-circuit transmission line with a total length of 229.5km and 468 pole foundation sites. The project runs through two provinces, Lao Cai and Phu Tho (previously four provinces: Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, and Vinh Phuc), commencing at the Lao Cai 500kV substation and terminating at the Vinh Yen 500kV substation. The Project’s total investment, exceeding VND 7,410 billion, is financed with 80% from a loan provided by the Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank) and 20% from EVN’s counterpart capital. In addition, the Lao Cai 500kV Substation Phase 2 project, with a total investment of over VND 1,564 billion, has also been completed, including the construction and energization of the 500kV switchyard and 500kV transformer, in synchronization with the Lao Cai – Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line project.

After being put into operation, the Lao Cai – Vinh Yen 500kV transmission line will have the capacity to transmit approximately 3,000MW from hydropower plants in the Northwest region and neighboring provinces to the national grid, while enhancing the country’s electricity import capacity. At the same time, it enhances inter-regional connectivity within the power system, improves the safe and stable operation of the national grid, reduces transmission losses, and increases the efficiency of EVN’s power production and business activities.

After successfully energizing the Lao Cai - Vinh Yen 500kV Transmission Line and the Lao Cai 500kV Substation along with the connecting 220kV transmission lines, Vietnam Electricity and Power Project Management Board 1 in coordination with relevant units at the construction site will continue completing the work and related administrative procedures, aiming to put the work into operation in early October 2025, practically celebrating the 71st anniversary of the Capital’s Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2025), as well as to welcome the 1st Congress of the Government’s Party Committee for the 2025 - 2030 tenure and the 14th National Congress of the Party.
