Upgrading 500kV Pho Noi Substation to 1,800 MVA which strengthening power supply for Northern Vietnam

25/03/2026 16:35:18

At 2:00 AM on March 25th 2026, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), the Power Transmission Project Management Board (NPTPMB), in coordination with the National Electricity System and Market Operation Company Limited (NSMO) and relevant units, successfully energized the project of upgrading 500kV Pho Noi Substation’s capacity.

Project stakeholders witnessed the energization milestone

This is a special-grade energy project (Group B), with EVNNPT as the investor, NPTPMB acting on behalf of the investor for project management and administration, and Power Transmission Company No. 1 responsible for operation. The project was implemented within the existing 500kV Pho Noi Substation (without land expansion), located in Dai Dong Commune, Hung Yen Province.

The 500kV Pho Noi Substation plays a critically important role in supplying electricity to Hung Yen Province, the southeastern area of Hanoi, and neighboring provinces. Prior to the upgrade, the substation frequently operated at over 90% load, at times reaching up to 97%. To ensure reliable power supply during the 2026 peak dry season, the project was classified as an urgent project and approved by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 2634/QĐ-TTg dated December 2nd 2025.

Fire Prevention and Rescue Police forces (Hung Yen Provincial Police), in coordination with relevant units, were on standby to ensure fire and explosion safety during energization

The project scope includes the installation of one new 500kV–900MVA transformer (AT5), isolating the existing 500kV–600MVA transformer (AT1) for standby operation, thereby increasing the total capacity of the 500kV Pho Noi Substation from 1,500MVA to 1,800MVA; Installation of equipment for the 500kV main bay of transformer AT5; installation of equipment for the 220kV main bay of transformer AT5; installation of tubular busbars and the 35kV auxiliary system for transformer AT5; and completion of technical solutions in accordance with the substation’s capacity scale.

The project commenced on November 20th 2025. After intensive efforts with round-the-clock operations (three shifts, four crews), the project was completed by the afternoon of March 23rd 2026. The investor’s acceptance council approved energization shortly thereafter. The project was energized on March 25th 2026, ahead of the schedule assigned by EVNNPT under Decision No. 315/QĐ-EVNNPT dated February 12th 2026 (originally planned for Q2/2026), demonstrating the strong project management capability of NPTPMB and the dedication of all participating units on site.

Completing the project ahead of the dry season helps reduce the load on existing 500kV transformers at the substation, thereby ensuring N-1 reliability criteria, enhancing system stability, and improving the safety and reliability of power supply for Hung Yen Province, southeastern Hanoi, and neighboring areas. This contributes significantly to regional socio-economic development.
